Richard J. Van Loon Scholarship 2025 at Carleton University

Awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Richard J. Van Loon Scholarship Committee to an outstanding international student from an African country. Eligible recipients will be full-time students proceeding from one year to another in any program of study at Carleton University. Consideration will be given to students in financial need.

If an undergraduate student is selected, the scholarship will be awarded by the Director of Undergraduate Awards and Financial Aid, if a graduate student is selected, the scholarship will be awarded by the Vice Provost of Graduate Studies. Endowed in 2005 by friends, family and colleagues in honour of Richard J. Van Loon, Carleton’s 10th President.

• This scholarship is valued at $5,000. Two scholarships will be awarded.

Eligibility for Van Loon Scholarship

• Applicant must be a citizen of an African country.
• Applicant must be an international student, who is required to have a valid study permit for Canada.
• Applicant must be proceeding from one year to another in an academic program at Carleton University.
• Applicant must be enrolled full time.
• Applicant must be in good academic standing.
• Preference will be given to students in financial need.

Application

To apply,

• Provide one (1) official piece of proof of citizenship.
• Provide one (1) letter of academic recommendation. The letter should show clear support of how you are an excellent candidate for the Richard J. Van Loon Scholarship. Be sure to choose a person from one of the following sources: A professor who has taught a class you successfully completed, thesis advisor, graduate supervisor, dean of a faculty, a director of a school or institute, or a chair of a department/program. They must write a letter that will speak to your experiences meeting the specific eligibility criteria as well as the ways in which you exemplify the values of this award.
