The Research in Industrial Projects for Students (RIPS) program at the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM), University of California, Los Angeles, is once again opening its doors for talented undergraduates from around the world. The RIPS-LA 2026 edition offers a fully funded 9-week research experience, where students solve real-world problems proposed by industry and government partners.
RIPS brings together teams of 4–5 undergraduate students to tackle applied mathematics, data science, and computational challenges drawn directly from industry or public-sector organizations. Each team works under the joint supervision of an academic mentor (from UCLA or IPAM) and an industry mentor from the sponsoring organization.
By the end of the program, students deliver a written report and formal presentation outlining their research findings and practical recommendations. The experience bridges theory and practice—helping students see how mathematical and computational methods drive innovation in the real world.
Participants live together in UCLA campus housing and enjoy access to world-class research facilities, workshops, and the vibrant Los Angeles innovation ecosystem.
RIPS-LA is fully funded and provides all key support for participants, including:
(Exact dates will be confirmed on the official IPAM website closer to launch.)
Many past RIPS alumni have gone on to leading graduate programs at MIT, Stanford, Cambridge, and ETH Zürich—or to careers in data science, finance, and technology firms worldwide.
RIPS-Los Angeles is more than just a summer program—it’s a launchpad for future innovators. It empowers talented young minds to transform their academic knowledge into impactful, real-world solutions.
If you’re passionate about mathematics, computing, and innovation, and you want a summer that shapes your future, then RIPS-LA 2026 at UCLA is your perfect destination.
