JSK Journalism Fellowship 2026-27 | Stanford University Residency for Journalists

The JSK Journalism Fellowship is a nine-month residential program at Stanford University created for journalists worldwide who want dedicated time away from daily deadlines to rethink journalism, explore innovation, and build leadership resilience.

Each year up to 20 fellows are selected to join a collaborative cohort that works on reimagining journalism’s future — media sustainability, innovation, community-centered news, press freedom and other pressing issues.

Who Can Apply? Eligibility & Requirements

To apply for the JSK Fellowship, applicants must meet these conditions:

  • At least 5 years of professional journalism experience (internships or student experience do not count).
  • Experience can come from roles such as reporting, editing, producing, independent journalism, or media entrepreneurship.
  • The fellowship is not open to individuals working in PR, corporate communications, government information offices, in-house publications, or full-time academia.
  • A college degree is not required — demonstrated journalistic excellence and commitment are what matter most.

 What the Fellowship Offers

JSK Fellows receive an extensive support package, including:

  • A generous stipend for the full 9-month residency (recent cycles listed around USD 130,000).
  • Health insurance for the fellow and eligible dependents.
  • Housing and relocation support to help transition to the Stanford campus area.
  • Full access to Stanford University courses, lectures, libraries, research centers and faculty (fellows can audit classes).
  • Leadership coaching, cohort workshops, innovation training, and project-support activities.
  • A powerful global alumni network of journalists, media innovators and newsroom leaders.

The fellowship is not a degree program — it is a professional residency focused on exploration, learning and leadership.

 The Application Process

Applicants must complete an online form and submit the following:

  • A resume or CV highlighting journalism experience
  • A short selfie-video (around 1 minute) explaining career direction and vision
  • One work sample that best represents journalistic work
  • Contact information for three professional references (letters not required initially)
  • A clear explanation of any use of AI tools in application materials, as part of the program’s transparency policy

Short-listed candidates progress to interviews and additional assessment rounds.

 Why This Fellowship Matters

The JSK Fellowship is globally recognized because it:

  • Gives journalists time away from newsroom pressure to experiment, heal, reflect and innovate
  • Connects fellows with diverse global peers, offering new ideas and collaborative energy
  • Provides access to Stanford’s cross-disciplinary resources, which can spark new projects
  • Allows experimentation with new media models, investigative approaches or entrepreneurial ventures
  • Strengthens leadership capacity for journalists who want to shape the future of media
