Executive Director position is available in British and Irish Agencies Afghanistan Group (BAAG). The Executive Director will manage the BAAG team which currently consists of four posts: Senior Adviser; Programme Manager; Project Coordinator; and Project Assistant. He/She also takes responsibility for the management and supervision of researchers and other consultants whom BAAG hires for specific projects.

The post-holder must be willing to work flexibly and to undertake occasional overseas travel, including to Afghanistan and its neighbouring countries.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement the strategic direction of BAAG as agreed by the membership and the Board;
  • Represent BAAG at a senior level in policy discussions with governments, including the UK, EU and Afghanistan;
  • Also, Lead and oversee the development and implementation of BAAG’s advocacy strategy;
  • Manage BAAG programmes and projects that are implemented independently or jointly with partners;
  • Oversee BAAG’s financial management, including compliance with donor requirements;
  • Furthermore, The development and implementation of a fundraising strategy;
  • Manage the BAAG team.
  • Ensure that there is an effective and objective monitoring and analysis of developments in Afghanistan, in order to identify trends and priority areas
  • Lead the development of BAAG’s advocacy positions on prioritised areas. Commission research, briefings and policy papers
  • Actively promote BAAG’s key messages through developing as well as maintaining partnerships with key NGOs and partners
  • Develop and maintain high level contacts with policy makers, government officials, parliamentarians and donors in the UK, EU and Afghanistan, as well as inter-governmental organisations

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Substantial management experience
  • Proven experience of strategic planning
  • Substantial programme development and management experience, for instance, developing proposals and logframes, monitoring and evaluation.
  • Experiencing of managing programmes funded by institutions, such as DFID, is essential.
  • Experience of representing an organisation or network and influencing negotiations with policy makers and government bodies at a senior level.
  • Likewise, Experience of developing successful policy and advocacy themes in a complex and fast-moving environment.
  • A minimum of two years experience of working in a non-governmental organisation, sufficient to ensure an understanding of the issues faced by development, humanitarian and human rights NGOs in fragile, conflict and post conflict situations.
  • Moreover, Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and the ability to convey complex information in a format that can be understood by a range of audiences.
  • Very good planning skills including the ability to prioritise work effectively and to meet tight deadlines.
  • In addition, Good organisational skills including the ability to plan external events.
