The Future of Money Award 2019 is now calling for applications. The award has been running since 2009 and was created in order to develop links between the financial industry and creative practitioners from around the world. It does this by using the opportunity to present thought-provoking ideas to a group of financial experts and industry leaders during Money20/20 Europe in Amsterdam.

Arguably there has been no greater time of financial uncertainty than today and no greater need for fresh ideas and imaginative insights which help inform, suggest and question our current technological, social and cultural direction. In the past, adding another lock, or increasing the wall thickness of a safe was the obvious solution to deter theft.  However, money is no longer physical, it is now predominantly a data set in sharing via telecommunications, securing via encryption, transactions via smartphone or exchange into V-bucks. As money becomes completely electronic, new crimes will undoubtedly occur, which take advantage of the technology itself or the social conventions on which it rests. Perhaps if we could imagine what crimes might happen, we could start to think about how to prevent them.

Thus, the award invites creative practitioners to employ a speculative design approach and design a future financial crime. A crime which utilises a new loophole, a change in social convention or specific technology development.

Prize

• A €3000 grand prize for the winner
• €1000 each for project development for the shortlisted projects.
• Furthermore, the shortlisted entrants will have the opportunity to present their concepts at Money20/20 Europe to an audience of financial experts and industry leaders, where the Grand Prize winner will be chosen.

Eligibility

• The competition is only open to designers who live in Europe.
• The competition is only open to designers who are available to attend the Money20/20 conference at the beginning of June. For shortlisted candidates, the team will cover flights and accommodation.
• Application submissions can be on behalf of design collectives/studios as well as individual designers.
• Only one application per designer.
• Applications must be in response to the brief and feature new work of the designer’s own making.
• Only applications via email will get considerations
• The selected designers / artists will need to participate in Money20/20 Europe.
