Roles and Responsibilities
- Develop and assess underbody to tophat interfaces and joining methods for next-generation vehicles
- Designs and assess cross-system integration concepts for various systems of the vehicle (i.e.: electrical, water management, sealing, NVH, class “A” body panel attachment)
- Develop and assess vehicle components produced by additive manufacturing processes
- Lead and implement research projects using innovative vehicle design concepts focused on improving design and process efficiency
- Develop and identify state-of-the-art designs and processes for manufacturing a vehicle
- Develop cost-effective solutions to support next-generation electric vehicles
- Identify and prove-out novel materials and manufacturing processes for the Factory of the Future
- Examine & assess the business case & trade-offs of using new innovative designs & manufacturing concepts for high volume automotive applications
- Evaluate/Characterize mechanical properties of new materials for automotive use. (composites, plastics, and lightweight metals)
- Assess robustness of new technologies and materials via DOE’s, testing and data analysis
- Interface with Ford internal customers (PD, Assembly Operations) to ensure research alignment with stakeholder needs and requirements
- Document findings via oral presentations and written technical reports
- Position in Research to develop innovative solutions for Factory of the future
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Systems Engineering, Master’s Degree will be more preferred
- At least years of experience in automotive design and engineering
- Highly motivated, self-starter attributes
- Strong Written and Oral Communication Skills
- Knowledge of joining / joints / interfaces (mechanical attachment, electrical & fluid connections, NVH & dielectric isolation)
- Experience using ADAMS FEA for conducting multibody dynamics structural analysis
- Experience with development of advanced mechatronic systems (integrated sensor, actuator, structures, surfaces, materials)
- Background in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
- Familiarity with automotive system design and testing requirements
- Familiarity with Variation Simulation Analysis (VSA) modeling
- Background with DFMEA, Robustness and Reliability metrics and also, lightweight materials specifically composites, plastics, and lightweight metals
- Background and knowledge in new manufacturing areas such as Additive Manufacturing
- Demonstrated capability in data analysis and documentation
- Excellent leadership, communication and project management skills
- Proven skills to innovate and implement
