Position: Researcher – Molecular Genetics
The International Rice Research Institute Institute is an international agricultural research and training organization. In addition to the headquarter in Los Baños of Philippines, the organization has an office in other several locations in seventeen countries. The Institute aims to reduce poverty and hunger, improve the health of rice farmers and consumers, and ensure environmental sustainability of rice farming.
About role
The successful appointee will carry out the following functions
- Execute laboratory and glasshouse operations, including PCR, DNA extraction for genotyping, KASP/PACE assays.
- Record and curate genotyping results in appropriate databases as well as assist with the curation of plant records in B4R.
- Maintain a safe and efficient working environment through reporting all incidents, near misses and suggesting possible solutions in order to improve operations and systems. Also, facilitate the processing and documentation of the Seed and Non-seed material exchanges thru B4R.
- Provide timely, consistent and accurate information to direct supervisor/requestor to ensure smooth flow of research activities (i.e. availability and purchase of supplies, reporting of equipment malfunction) and those research objectives and SOPs are followed.
- Communicate selection decisions to glasshouse staff for action.
- Support scholars, students, researchers and scientists in establishing glasshouse experiments and needed requirements for the Seed and Non-seed material exchanges.
- Operate machinery and equipment to deliver service and experimental support as per request.
- Assist team members in data collection, encoding, analysis and other pertinent documentation ensuring accuracy and quality outputs.
- Prepare materials and lay-out and ensure proper maintenance of the experiment operations, as required by the institute and government protocols including maintenance of storage and preparation of supplies, property and material inventory, cleanliness, orderliness, and safety, preparation of commonly used fertilizers and chemicals as well as waste disposal.
- Contribute to the preparation of reports and manuscripts where appropriate.
- Furthermore, prepare documents as required by the institute and government protocols for the Seed and Non-seed material exchanges/transfers.
Minimum requirements
- Bachelor of Science graduate in a relevant discipline with at least 2 years of relevant work experience.
- Proficient in DNA and RNA extraction as well as proficient in PCR setup, running, scoring and data management for marker-assisted selection.
- Significant familiarity with MS Office. Similarly, familiarity with developmental and molecular genetics and Mendelian genetics principles.
