Position summary

The Department of Religious Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Virginia invites applications for a Research Assistant Professor in Tibetan Studies. The position holder will be performing scholarly activities revolving around Tibetan Buddhist contemplative traditions, including but not limited to a special focus on the rdzogs chen tradition. The incumbent will also be cataloging Tibetan literature, marking up Tibetan texts, writing English summaries of Tibetan texts, using text analysis tools to analyze Tibetan literature, to do a scholarly analysis of Tibetan texts and contemplative traditions and write up the results.  In addition to that, the person may need to teach courses in these areas.

Requirements

The candidate for the position of Research Assistant Professor of Tibetan Studies  at the University of Virginia must have

• Ph.D. in Tibetan Buddhist Studies with a focus on tantric traditions.
• Fluency in classical Tibetan as well as in spoken/written English.
• Strong knowledge of rdzogs chen tradition and its original literature.
• Ability to write high-quality scholarly essays about Buddhist contemplative traditions and also experience with using technology to analyze Tibetan texts.
• Requires residency in Charlottesville.
