The applications for the Science Technology and Arts Prize for 2020 have opened. Interested candidates can apply until 2nd March, 2020.

STARTS organizes the competition. It is an initiative of European Commission to foster alliances of technology and artistic practice. Additionally, as part of this initiative, the STARTS Prize awards the most pioneering collaborations and results in the field of creativity and innovation at the crossings of science and technology with the arts. The STARTS Prize of the European Commission is launched by Ars Electronica, BOZAR and Waag.

Prize Value

STARTS offers two prizes of same value of €20,000 to honor innovative projects at the intersection of science, technology and the arts

• Grand Prize – Artistic Exploration is for artistic exploration for the projects with the potential to influence or change the way  people perceive technology.
• Grand Prize – Innovative Collaboration is for innovative collaboration between industry/technology and art/culture in ways that open up new paths for innovation.

Eligibility

• Artists/creative professionals or the researchers/companies involved from throughout the world
• STARTS is not limited to citizens of EU-member states.

Selection Criteria

STARTS will select the candidates on the basis of following criteria for the Science Technology and Arts Prize 2020

• Quality of the artistic research and its potential influence on technology
• Also, success of the collaboration between art and technology
• Additionally, intensity and quality of the connection to innovation, education, social inclusion or sustainability
• Furthermore, general criteria such as aesthetics, originality, convincing concept, innovation and the technique and quality of the presentation

Required Documents

• The candidates must submit a video documentary. It should be approximately 3 minutes in length
• Also, they must submit images (JPG, TIF, BMP, PNG) at the highest possible resolution.The organizer will not accept compressed files (such as .zip or .lzh files).
• Additionally, they must showcase clear, detailed description of the artistic concept, the form of interaction and technical implementation. Since, specific prerequisites have to be fulfilled for an onsite presentation to take place (e.g. in conjunction with the Ars Electronica Festival), the project’s specifications as to hardware & software and spatial requirements should be as detailed as possible.
• Moreover, the entrants must specify what they can provide on their own in order to stage such an onsite presentation, and what must necessarily be furnished by Ars Electronica Linz.
• Also,the applicants must submit a printable portrait photo and a biography of the artist
• Furthermore, the applicants may also submit additional material such as images, documents and drawings (as PNG or PDF)
