The United Nations Office in Geneva calls candidates to apply for the vacancy of Editor in the Arabic Language. The incumbent will join the Editing Section of Languages Service at Division of Conference Management to perform the following duties.
Editing and doing reviews of publications and parliamentary documents, including complex or politically sensitive material, normally without revision, to ensure accuracy, clarity, cohesion, and conformity with United Nations standards, policy and practice.
Carrying out more extensive editing where required, including rewriting, abridging and restructuring texts for greater readability and better logical sequence.
Consulting with author departments and carrying out research to clarify ambiguities and rectify substantive errors.
Producing the master copy of a text to be followed by a multilingual team of editors.
Acting as head of a team of editors, editorial assistants, proofreaders, and other staff. Similarly, leading, supervising and coordinating their work and preparing their performance appraisal reports and reports to the Chief of Section on staff performance.
Also, acting for the head of the office or group in his or her absence.
Assisting the Chief of Section in managing policy, administrative and operational matters.
Training junior or short-term language staff and revises their work.
Assisting staff of substantive units and delegations with the drafting of documentation. Also, advising on matters concerning editorial policy and practice.
Furthermore, performing other related duties as required.
Requirements
Candidates must have the following requirements in order to be eligible for this vacancy of the Arabic Editor on United Nations Office in Geneva
University degree or equivalent academic qualifications. Candidates must pass United Nations Competitive Examination for Translators/Précis-writers, Editors, Verbatim Reporters and Copy Preparers/Proofreaders/Production Editors in Arabic or any United Nations Language Competitive Examination in Arabic for this position.
Minimum five years of experience in editing, translation, précis-writing, self-revision, verbatim reporting, copy preparing, proofreading, production editing or in another relevant language field, and using relevant computer software, electronic tools, and databases.
In addition to that, three years of experience within a multilingual setting is desirable.
Also, extensive experience in editing publications and documents on international law is desirable.
Experience in planning, writing, copy-preparation, proofreading and the production of publications is an asset.
Fluency in Arabic is necessary for this (Arabic must be the first language of the candidate). Furthermore, fluency in English or French, or at least any one of the UN official languages.
