Apply for the position of Social Affairs Officer in the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs in New York!

The Social Affairs Officer reports to the Senior Social Affairs of the Capacity Development and Partnerships Coordination Section (CDPCS). The Division seeks to strengthen international cooperation for achieving social inclusion and the reduction of the gap of inequalities, by fostering effective policy impact and intensified global dialogue on social development issues.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting countries in the translation of international agreements into national strategies
  • Providing assistance to Governments in devising multidisciplinary operational strategies that promote equitable social and economic development
  •  Organizing training workshops and seminars to enhance national capacities in the formulation, monitoring, and implementation of national policies and programs
  • Preparing analytical documentation reflecting best practices and experience at the national as well as the regional level to be shared with counterparts within the United Nations system, governments, and civil society
  • Also, Formulating, executing, monitoring, and evaluating specific technical cooperation projects;
  • Identifying, evaluating as well as proposing potential partners for technical cooperation within and outside the United Nations system;
  • Maintaining close relationships with the UN Resident Coordinators, experts in the fields from academia, civil society, and other development partners;
  • In addition, Provide support to the resource mobilization effort
  • Follows intergovernmental meetings on social development, the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and incorporates results/findings of these meetings into capacity building and technical cooperation efforts;
  • Moreover, Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education

An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in sociology, economics, other social science, or related field is required.

A first-level university degree in combination with additional two years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in socio-economic development, policy analysis, social research, or related field.
  • Experience with technical cooperation activities at the international, regional as well as national level is desirable.
  • Also, Experience with UN intergovernmental meetings and processes and working with UNDP resident coordinators is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise. There may be competency-based interviews.
