Assistant Professor – History of Philosophy position available at the College of Humanities and The Arts of San Jose State University.

The department embraces a diversity of philosophical approaches, especially those that view philosophical questions and methods in a global context and those that engage with issues of special relevance to the Silicon Valley. The department welcomes candidates who pursue cross-tradition engagement in doing history of philosophy.

Area of Specialization: History of Philosophy (any historical period).

Area of Competence:  Open (though the department has needs in social and political philosophy).

Qualifications and Requirements

 Ph.D. in Philosophy prior to appointment, a strong teaching record, and evidence of the ability to publish and engage in professional activities in the area of specialization. Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.

Responsibilities

In addition to courses in area of specialization, the candidate will be expected to teach coursework in the team-taught Humanities Honors Program or Advanced Honors Program, which survey major ideas and works across western and non-western traditions. The candidate will also be expected to teach general education courses that could include Introduction to Philosophy; Logic and Critical Reasoning; Moral Issues; Asian Philosophy; Professional and Business Ethics; and Philosophy of Science.  Scholarship, committee work, and department service are expected.  The current teaching load is 3 courses per semester (approximately 120 students per term) with service expectations at department, college, and university levels.

Candidate must address the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation – through course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
