Position: Academic Advisor at the College of Health
Responsibilities
The position holder will join the College of Health Team. Basically, s/he supports retention, progression, and graduation of students across several degree programs in Clayton State University’s Center for Advising and Retention. In addition to that, the successful appointee will be performing the following duties in particular
- Monitor, advises and tracks the retention, progression, and graduation of all students within the assigned population.
- Execute, and evaluate SSC campaigns in collaboration with the Assistant Director.
- Provides fundamental level support while advising on academic, career, and life goals
- Make resolution recommendations on academic advising matters to the Assistant Director.
- Advise students regarding academic programs, curricula, and course selections.
- Maintains students’ files updated throughout their academic careers and makes changes to records as necessary.
- Disseminates information on university policies and procedures to faculty, parents, students, etc. Similarly, provides assistance and advisement to students in the areas of program admission requirements, registration, probation, academic suspension, and other academic policies and procedures.
- Conducts orientation sessions for groups of incoming students. Audits student records for curriculum, major, graduation requirements. Similarly, follow up in advising students who have obtained failing midterm and final grades.
- Evaluates and determines transfer credits; researches course descriptions to determine transferability.
- Compares transcripts with entrance and graduation requirements, and advises students on appropriate actions.
- Refers students with academic discrepancies to proper officials for further action.
- Also, assist in the preparation of special reports relating to enrollment and related matters.
- Evaluates and maintains student records for degree requirements using academic evaluation system. Monitors student registration activities and academic performance/progress.
- Furthermore, coordinate communications to students regarding course scheduling, core and major requirements, academic resources, etc.
Requirements
In order to be eligible for the post, the candidate must have the following qualifications
- University degree in a related field. In addition to that, one to three years of related experience or an equivalent of education and experience.
- Knowledge of student information systems (for example, BANNER) is preferred.; knowledge of academic fields for advising disciplines.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite; Knowledge of Degree Audit tools (DegreeWorks is preferred). Similarly, knowledge of the use of predictive analytics to inform advising and retention practices (Student Success Collaborative is preferred)
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; effective organizational skills and time management skills
- Must be flexible and be able to prioritize and to function independently with minimal supervision;
- Similarly, s/he must be able to work cooperatively and diplomatically with superiors, peers, students, and outside agencies; the ability to function with a diverse student population with varied academic backgrounds, special needs, and multicultural issues.
- Also, the ability to work flexible schedules (some evenings and Saturdays are required).
