The University of Oregon’s English Department invites applications for non-tenure-track positions of Career Instructor in English to teach in the Composition Program beginning September 16, 2019.
The University seeks candidates specializing in Rhetoric and Composition or a closely related field. Competitive applicants will have training and recent full-time experience teaching college-level argumentative writing to students from diverse backgrounds. The course load is 3 per term, totaling 9 courses per year, teaching primarily in the lower division writing courses: WR 121 (Written Reasoning as Discovery and Inquiry), WR 122 (Written Reasoning as a Process of Argument), and WR 123 (Written Reasoning in the Context of Research). Typical enrollment in Composition Program courses ranges from 18-23 students per course. Depending on training, experience, and departmental needs, some Career Instructors may be asked to teach in other areas. It especially encourages applicants with experience and/or training in equity and inclusion in the classroom, multilingual writing, and digital pedagogies. All teaching positions in English involve student advising and departmental service and participation in program assessment.
This is a non-tenure-track, nine-month, renewable position at 1.0 FTE. Annual contracts are renewable for the first four years of employment, followed by a two-year renewal. Career Instructors are eligible for promotion to Senior Instructor after 18 terms of teaching. Salary floor is $42,000, and salary will be commensurate with experience.
