Research Fellow position available at the Department of Global Health at the Boston University School of Public Health. This is an opening for a masters prepared or pre-doctoral research fellow to coordinate research activities on the optimal use of medical equipment in Special Newborn Care Units (SNCUs) in India.  This is a grant-funded position with an initial one-year term, renewable for an additional 6 months, conditional on funding and performance.  It is based in Boston and may require travel to India. The start date is as soon as possible but no later than January 1, 2019.

About the Department

The Department of Global Health has a large research program on maternal and child health in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. It recently received a 1.5-year award from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation focusing on optimizing medical equipment in the recently established network of SNCUs throughout India.  It will synthesize and analyze existing data, collect new data on opinions of health care professions about optimal medical equipment, and prepare for future studies in which it will evaluate the efficacy and cost effectiveness of equipment bundles to reduce adverse neonatal outcomes.

It is seeking a full-time research fellow to coordinate the management of the project and research activities. The candidate will join the existing research team and report to the project PI, Professor Patricia Hibberd.  The project manager will coordinate and collaborate closely with colleagues in the United States and India.

Key Responsibilities

  • Function as the communication hub between the PI and BU based team, the field-based team and the Technical Team in order to facilitate smooth implementation of program activities and minimize conflicts between activities.
  • Track and monitor progress of all project activities to ensure staying on schedule and that all objectives are being met.
  • Collect information and compile draft routine reports from the technical and field team for preparation for submission to the donor.
  • Draft presentations of research progress and results for interim reporting.
  • Prepare IRB submissions for the project, including annual reports.
  • Assist in developing the project monitoring and improvement plan and associated instruments and standard operating procedures.
  • Assist with literature searches and systematic reviews.
  • Work with investigators and in-country project staff to develop monitoring instruments and training tools for project.
  • Liaise with the field and technical teams on project implementation, data collection and transfer of data.
  • Contribute to generating scientific output from the work including manuscripts, abstracts, presentations, briefs, etc.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • At least 1 – 3 years’ experience in global health implementation projects, analysis
  • MPH (or equivalent) or pre-doctoral students
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, leadership, writing and oral presentation skills
  • Ability to work in a complex environment with multiple tasks
  • A highly-motivated self-starter who is able to meet and exceed project goals with minimal supervision
  • Ability to travel up to 20%
