Director of Programs and Campaigns position is available in the Amnesty International National Office of Brazil. The incumbent reports to the Amnesty International Brazil (AIB) Executive Director. The purpose of the AIB is to act voluntarily to ensure and promote worldwide respect for the human rights so that every individual can enjoy all the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights documents, that is, civil, political, cultural, economic and social rights. The post holder will provide strategic leadership and vision for Amnesty Brazil’s research, policy, advocacy, campaigns, communication, activism and mobilisation activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide sound, timely political advice in order to ensure a continued strategic focus at the country level
- Exercise strategic leadership and provide sound political judgment and expertise in relation to AI’s work in Brazil in order to lead the development of integrated and coherent country, regional, and thematic strategies
- Deliver impactful and fully integrated campaigns (national/regional/global)
- Work with the campaigns, communications, activism, movement building and media to increase activist and public engagement in AI’s campaigns
- Lead on field research missions and development of human rights research plans and projects.
- In addition, develop a robust and innovative strategy for activism and mobilisation aimed at consolidating a diverse and sustainable movement
Qualifications and Requirements
- First-hand expert knowledge of, and ability to analyse, political, civil society and human rights issues in Brazil
- Excellent understanding of human rights work, including the international legal framework, human rights architecture and the requirements of campaigning work, with a proven record of success in using these tools to change policy
- Similarly, excellent political judgment and the ability to spot both risks and opportunities
- Moreover, excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Spanish (desirable).
- Strategic thinker with a developed capacity to build and convey the big picture
- Also, well-developed communication, presentation, spokesperson, advocacy and representational skills appropriate for diverse audiences and the media, including the ability to make and win arguments.
