This position is located in the Peacekeeping Support Cluster of the General Legal Division, Office of Legal Affairs. The Legal Officer reports to the Team leader, the Principal Legal Officer and the Director of the General Legal Division.
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in public international law is required. A first-level university degree in law, in combination with two additional years of the required work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Admittance to the bar of a Member State of the Organization, or otherwise qualified to
practice law is required.
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in the practice of law, including public international law, including legal analysis, research and writing is required. Qualifying years of experience are calculated following the receipt of the university degree in law recognized by the United Nations.
Experience working in a law firm or in an international organization or in governmental service dealing with matters of international law is required.
Experience in dealing with legal issues related to the operational activities of the
United Nations, including its subsidiary organs or bodies, is desirable.
Experience in dealing with legal issues related to the work of the Organization’s (or similar international organizations’) peacekeeping or other operations in the field is desirable.
Experience in drafting and providing legal advice on peacekeeping-related support arrangements with Member States and other international organizations (including agreements, letters of assist and memoranda of understanding) is desirable.
