Legal Officer position available in the Office of the Legal Counsel in the Office of Legal Affairs. The incumbent reports to a Senior Legal Officer.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare or assist in the preparation of advice to the Secretary-General, the Organization’s political organs and other Secretariat units and the Organization’s offices, programmes and funds on the interpretation of the Relationship Agreement between the United Nations and the International Criminal Court and related resolutions of the General Assembly;
  • Prepare or assist in the preparation of legal opinions/advice to other Secretariat units and the Organization’s peacekeeping operations, its special political missions and its offices, programmes and funds in the handling of requests from the International Criminal Court for cooperation and support
  • Conduct extensive legal research and analysis and prepare studies, briefs, reports and correspondence;
  • Undertake basic or extensive review of legal documents, instruments, or other material to be submitted to the International Criminal Court; identifies important issues, similarities, and inconsistencies, etc.;
  • Prepare or assist in the preparation of drafts of background papers, studies, reports, legislative texts and commentaries on those texts, teaching materials in the field of international criminal law;
  • Prepare or assist in the preparation of agreements with the International Criminal Court;

Qualifications and Requirements

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in public international law and a first-level university degree in law are required. A first-level university degree in law with training in international law in combination with qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional experience in law is required, including legal analysis, research and writing is required.
  • At least one year of professional legal experience handling information on international crimes that could be used as evidence is desirable.
  • At least two years of professional experience working with the United Nations or a related intergovernmental organization is desirable.
  • Fluency in English and French are required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
