Political Affairs Officer Job at United Nations, New York
About role
The United Nations Department of Political Affairs and Peace-building is seeking qualified and experienced political affairs officer. The position holder will operate in the Division for Palestinian Rights in the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs at Headquarters in New York.
Key duties
In addition to the reporting to Director of Division, the Political Affairs Officer will do the following specifications
- Plans and supervises the work of the International Meetings/Liaison with NGOs Team to ensure effective implementation of the programme of work of the Committee as it relates to the organization and servicing of international meetings and conferences and its programme of cooperation with civil society organisations, including the organisation of events.
- Supervises/coordinates substantive servicing of international meetings and conferences, including budget preparations and “Host Country” agreements. Also, drafts provisional concept papers, programmes of international meetings and prepares lists of prospective expert speakers for submission to the Committee’s Bureau.
- Undertakes preparations and participates, as required, in Committee delegation visits away from headquarters.
- Reviews and monitors activities relating to the question of Palestine.
- Participates in the drafting of statements and notes for the Committee Chairman and messages by the Secretary-General for the various international meetings held.
- Prepares Chairman’s summaries, the output document after each international meeting, and the Chairman’s report to the Committee, if required. At the same time, supervises, edits and/or drafts the comprehensive report of each international meeting.
- Periodically briefs the Bureau of the Committee on meetings’ preparations, lessons learnt, civil society initiatives, accreditation requests, and suggests a strategic direction, as appropriate.
- Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters. Similarly, briefs representatives and provide, as appropriate suggestions and recommendations relative to the implementation of the programme of the Division.
- Represents the Division Participates in conferences, seminars and academic fora related to the question of Palestine. Also, carries out, in consultation with the Director administrative functions relating to strategic planning and budgets.
- Appraises performance of team members as well as carries out recruitment-related assignments.
- Furthermore, performs other related duties as required.
Minimum requirements
In order to be eligible for this position, the candidates must have the following qualifications
- Advanced university degree in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related. However, candidates with a bachelors degree with two years of additional qualifying experience can also apply.
- In addition to that, a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area.
- Similarly, experience in servicing international meetings.
- Fluency in English is necessary for this position. However, knowledge of Arabic or French is desirable.
