Position: Political Affairs Officer at the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism
Responsibilities
The successful appointee will perform the following duties
- Reviews and monitors activities in the thematic areas assigned; assess trends that might affect the political situation and the political impact of intra-regional issues related to terrorism; recommends solutions/possible action by the United Nations.
- Following, analyses political and related events within the assigned area with a view to providing early warning advice to the Deputy to the USG of the Office of Counter-Terrorism.
- Prepares analytical reports and papers on sensitive and high-profile matters of concern to the General Assembly, Security Council, or other bodies; drafts notes, background papers, talking points, speeches and other correspondence for senior UN officials.
- Acts as a focal point for collection and analyses of information on political issues of assignment, particularly related to violent extremism as and when conducive to terrorism.
- Meets regularly with operational teams including UN staff, implementing partners and national officials to plan projects and review project activities.
- Provides up-to-date information to senior officials regarding substantive political matters and country or regional issues and makes recommendations on actions to take.
- Similarly, maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters; briefs representatives and provides, as appropriate suggestions and recommendations.
- Participates in conferences, seminars and academic fora related to his/her assigned area of expertise.
- Carries out administrative functions relating to the staff planning and budget. Similarly, drafts plans for the start-up of operations and participates in the activities of implementation.
- Furthermore, performs other related duties as required.
Requirements
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications
- Master’s degree in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related. However, bachelor degree holders with two additional years of qualifying experience are also eligible to apply.
- At least seven years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area.
- Experience working specifically on issues related to preventing and countering terrorism is necessary.
- Experience in administration, budget, or human resources management is desirable.
- Similarly, experience in drafting analytical papers on sensitive management and high-profile matters is desirable.
- Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
