The Stella Kupferberg Memorial Short Story Prize 2020 is a short story contest competition that is open to all the writers in the world. Gotham Writers organizes this competition where the famous stage and radio series Selected Shorts is the sponsor of Stella Kupferberg Memorial Short Story Prize 2020.

This long-running series at Symphony Space in New York City celebrates the art of the short story by having stars of stage and screen read aloud the works of established and emerging writers. Selected Shorts is recorded for Public Radio and heard nationally.

The notable writer and editor Nicole Chung will judge the 2020 Stella Kupferberg Memorial Short Story Prize will be judged by. Nicole is also the former managing editor of The Toast, the editor-in-chief of Catapult magazine, and the author of the memoir All You Can Ever Know

Prize

The winner will have an opportunity to perform and record their work live at a Selected Shorts performance at Symphony Space on June 10, 2020, and published on Electric Literature. The winning writer will receive $1000 and a free 10-week course with Gotham Writers.

Rules of Entry

  • Entries should be a maximum of 750 works and they can be on any theme.
  • The entree fee to the Stella Kupferberg Memorial Short Story Prize 2020 is $25. The entree fee is non-refundable.
  • Submissions must be entered by 11:59 PM EST on March 1, 2020.
  • Writers of all ages and nationalities are eligible.
  • The story must have a title.
  • Works previously published in print, online, or any other medium are not eligible to enter the Stella Kupferberg Memorial Short Story Prize 2020. Similarly, works in translation are also not eligible.
  • Already entered or submitted stories cannot be revised and edited.
  • Candidates can enter as many stories as the like, but a $25 fee is mandatory for each story.
  • The decision about the winner will be out in May 2020.
  • Furthermore,  organizers do not accept mailed, paper submissions. Stories received in the mail will be returned unread with the uncashed checks. If candidates have problems with the online form or are unable to submit online for some extenuating circumstance, they shall contact Selected Shorts directly at [email protected].
