Young Leaders in Research Grant 2026 — Up to $15,000 for Early-Career African Researchers

The Young Leaders in Research (YLR) Grant is a 12-month research funding programme offered by the African Center for Economic Transformation (ACET). Its purpose is to empower early-career African researchers (in economics or related fields) to lead policy-relevant, context-driven research that contributes to Africa’s structural transformation. Applicants are provided with financial support, mentorship, visibility and professional development opportunities. (ACET)

 What the Grant Offers

  • Research funding of up to US $15,000, which may go towards data collection, analysis, travel, materials and publication costs. (ACET)
  • One-on-one mentorship with senior fellows from ACET. (ACET)
  • Skill-building, peer learning and networking opportunities. (ACET)
  • Platform for publication and presentation, helping your research gain visibility and influence.

Research Themes & Focus Areas

For the 2026 cohort, research proposals should align with one or more of these thematic areas:

  • Gender Equality
  • Regional Integration
  • Innovation & Digital Policy
  • Green Industrial Transformation (ACET)

These themes are tied to ACET’s “Growth with DEPTH” framework, which emphasises diversification, export competitiveness, productivity, technology and human well-being. (ACET)

 Eligibility Criteria

Typical requirements include:

  • Applicants preferably African nationals or those holding permanent residency in an African country.
  • Age 35 or younger at the time of application. (ACET)
  • Must hold or be enrolled in a Master’s degree or higher.
  • Background in economics or a related field and a demonstrated interest in research through coursework, internships, or other projects.
  • Leadership potential and a commitment to positively impacting Africa’s development.

Independent researchers are welcome — affiliation with a formal research institution is not always required. (ACET)

Application Timeline & Process

  • Applications open: 30 September 2025. (ACET)
  • Final deadline: 21 November 2025.
  • Interviews: Starting early December 2025.
  • Cohort announced: Mid December 2025 or early January 2026. Program begins 2026. (ACET)
  • Submission requirements: Concept note (max 800 words), statement of purpose (max 500 words), CV, and two references.
