UPG Sustainability Leadership: Empowering Young Leaders for a Greener Future
UPG (United People Global) runs a movement called UPG Sustainability Leadership, designed to train and mobilize young individuals (18-35 years old) and organizations to be citizen leaders on sustainability. Each year, over 500 Sustainability Leaders are trained from all world regions to join a network of activists and changemakers who take action in their communities.
These leaders commit to doing more than just completing a course—they are expected to lead mini-trainings in their communities and implement a sustainability-related project after their training.
Who Can Apply & Key Eligibility
Here’s who UPG is looking for:
- Age: Between 18 and 35 years old, valid during 1 March to 31 July of the year of training.
- Language: Must read, write and speak English, since training is conducted in English.
- Motivation & Capability: Whether you’ve done sustainability work before or not, you need to show strong motivation, ideas for impact, and ability to act. Passion counts.
- Diversity: UPG values diversity—participants from all education levels, backgrounds, and regions are encouraged. No requirement to already be a leader.

If selected, here are the main benefits & what you’ll do:
Benefits:
- Free training online: All selected candidates go through the training program free of charge.
- Certification as a UPG Sustainability Leader after completing the training.
- For some cohorts or selected participants: a fully funded immersive trip (such as in the USA) may be included.
Commitments:
- Lead a sustainability-related project in your community or organization.
- Conduct at least one “mini-training session” to share knowledge from the program.
- Maintain connection with the UPG community and act as a “Champion” of citizen leadership.

- Fee: There is a small application/administrative fee (approx CHF 5) to submit the application. Selected training is free.
- Deadline: Applications are typically due by 31 December for the next class.
- Selection Criteria: Evaluated based on applicant profile (background/diversity), motivation, capability, and potential for impact.
