April 2026 — Japan — The SOKENDAI-KEK Summer Student Program 2026 (also known as the KEK SSP) is now open for applications from talented undergraduate and early master’s students around the world. It’s a fully funded summer research internship hosted by the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) in partnership with SOKENDAI — The Graduate University for Advanced Studies, giving participants hands-on experience conducting real scientific research in cutting-edge physics and technology facilities in Japan.
The SOKENDAI-KEK Summer Student Program offers international and Japanese students the chance to join research groups at KEK or the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) in Tsukuba and Tokai. Participants work on experimental, theoretical, or technical projects under the supervision of world-class researchers in fields such as particle physics, nuclear physics, material & life sciences, accelerator science, and advanced detection systems.
This programme is aimed at students who, as of March 1, 2026:
Are in the latter half of their undergraduate studies (typically 3rd/4th year)
OR in the early stages of a Master’s degree (PhD students are not eligible)
Have a strong academic background in physics, engineering, or related STEM fields
Basic knowledge in dynamics, electromagnetism, and quantum mechanics is recommended but may vary depending on research group fit.
Both international and Japanese students are encouraged to apply.
Participants may be placed in research groups focusing on:
The diversity of research themes ensures alignment with many scientific interests and career paths.
Applicants are required to:
Applications are submitted through the official online portal, and a recommendation letter must be uploaded separately by the recommender using the assigned ID.
📅 Application Deadline: February 27, 2026 — 9:00 AM (Japan Time)
📩 Notification of Results: Around April 17, 2026
Candidates used to receive selection results by mid-April after assessment of application materials and possible interviews.
Participants must obtain travel and medical insurance on their own; these are not covered by the programme. Visa requirements depend on your nationality and residency status.
The SOKENDAI-KEK Summer Student Program offers a rare opportunity to:
Many past participants have continued into advanced research roles or postgraduate studies, taking advantage of the connections and experience gained during the programme.
