SOKENDAI-KEK Summer Student Program 2026 | Fully Funded Research Internship in Japan

April 2026 — Japan — The SOKENDAI-KEK Summer Student Program 2026 (also known as the KEK SSP) is now open for applications from talented undergraduate and early master’s students around the world. It’s a fully funded summer research internship hosted by the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) in partnership with SOKENDAI — The Graduate University for Advanced Studies, giving participants hands-on experience conducting real scientific research in cutting-edge physics and technology facilities in Japan.

What the Program Is

The SOKENDAI-KEK Summer Student Program offers international and Japanese students the chance to join research groups at KEK or the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) in Tsukuba and Tokai. Participants work on experimental, theoretical, or technical projects under the supervision of world-class researchers in fields such as particle physics, nuclear physics, material & life sciences, accelerator science, and advanced detection systems.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Duration: Up to 8 weeks from mid-June to mid-August 2026 (theory placements may be shorter).
  • Location: KEK Tsukuba Campus & J-PARC Tokai Campus, Japan.
  • Funding Support:
    • Airfare coverage for students from non-Japanese universities
    • Accommodation in KEK/J-PARC dormitories
    • Daily stipend (around ¥1,500 per day) for living expenses
    • Domestic travel costs between arrival airport and programme site (Kek)
  • Supervised Research: Interns work directly with active research teams on real projects, gaining valuable practical experience.
  • Collaborative Environment: Possible opportunities to work alongside SOKENDAI students and postdoctoral researchers.

Eligibility

This programme is aimed at students who, as of March 1, 2026:

Are in the latter half of their undergraduate studies (typically 3rd/4th year)
OR in the early stages of a Master’s degree (PhD students are not eligible)
Have a strong academic background in physics, engineering, or related STEM fields
Basic knowledge in dynamics, electromagnetism, and quantum mechanics is recommended but may vary depending on research group fit.

Both international and Japanese students are encouraged to apply.

Common Research Areas

Participants may be placed in research groups focusing on:

  • Particle & Nuclear Physics
  • Accelerator Science & Technology
  • Material & Life Sciences
  • Advanced Detection Systems (Sensors/Electronics/Computing)
  • Theoretical Physics (e.g., computational methods)

The diversity of research themes ensures alignment with many scientific interests and career paths.

Application Essentials

Applicants are required to:

  1. Register online to obtain an application ID.
  2. Submit an application including:
    • CV
    • Academic transcript (with English translation if needed)
    • Completed application form
    • At least one recommendation letter from a supervisor familiar with the applicant’s academic work

Applications are submitted through the official online portal, and a recommendation letter must be uploaded separately by the recommender using the assigned ID.

Important Dates

📅 Application Deadline: February 27, 2026 — 9:00 AM (Japan Time)
📩 Notification of Results: Around April 17, 2026

Candidates used to receive selection results by mid-April after assessment of application materials and possible interviews.

Visa & Insurance

Participants must obtain travel and medical insurance on their own; these are not covered by the programme. Visa requirements depend on your nationality and residency status.

Why Join This Program

The SOKENDAI-KEK Summer Student Program offers a rare opportunity to:

  • Gain hands-on research experience at world-class accelerator facilities
  • Collaborate with international researchers at one of the world’s leading physics laboratories
  • Build a strong research network and professional portfolio for future graduate study or scientific careers
  • Experience life and science culture in Japan
