Bucharest International Student Model United Nations Conference 2017 is an academic simulation of several bodies of the United Nations and the North Atlantic Council, held in English and organized by the UN Youth Association of Romania.
UN committees simulations, known as “Model United Nations” have a long tradition in numerous prestigious universities across the globe, being recognized as important forums for debate due to their ability to provide viable solutions to current issues on the international agenda, but also due to their ability to provide alternative answers to difficult historical situations within the global political arena.
Since the first academic simulation of decision-making in the United Nations, held in 1952 at Harvard University, the phenomenon of “MUN” has expanded globally and attracts an increasing number of students, particularly in the fields of political science, international relations, diplomacy, law, economics, cultural studies, etc.
In Romania, as in most East European states, such Model United Nations conferences have become popular during the last decade. Therefore, the BISMUN Conference became the main national simulation of its kind, currently being at its ninth edition.

The BISMUN 2017 Conference will simulate the following committees: the UN Security Council, the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the 1st Committee of the GA (DISEC), the 3rd Committee of the GA (SOCHUM), the UN Human Rights Council, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Crisis Committee. Having the general theme “Multiculturalism in the United Nations – Accepting Differences for the Common Good” and this aspect will be reflected both in the choice of committees, as well as in the topics discussed. The main objectives of BISMUN 2017 Conference are: encouraging participatory democracy, raising awareness of the role of the UN and NATO, informing youth about the decision-making mechanisms of the UN, promoting multiculturalism and fighting against discrimination, as well as active citizenship of youth, outlining the importance of the concept of European citizenship and its promotion, developing solidarity and promoting tolerance, foster mutual understanding between youth in different countries, raising awareness of environmental responsibility and of the Global Goals among the youth. The 9th Edition of Bucharest International Student Model United Nations Conference will take place from the 22nd to the 27th of March 2017 at the Palace of Parliament and it will bring together over 250 participants from the European Union and from many countries all over the world. This edition aims to bring forth simulations of committees that were not present in previous years, such: the United Nations Environmental Programee (UNEP). BISMUN Conference has managed to get noticed by promoting high standards of quality in organizing and conducting the event, ensuring circumstances of relevant academic experience for participants and strengthening institutional and academic partnerships with major institutions in Romania, aimed at further and continuous development of the project.
