North Model United Nations (NorthMUN) is a student-led day conference that will take place at SFU’s Burnaby Mountain Campus. They seek to be an outlet that will encourage students all across the Greater Vancouver area to develop and share their diplomatic talents and abilities by debating pressing global issues around the world. Moreover, the conference hopes to deliver an unforgettable delegation experience for all participants and become a quintessential part of their local MUN community.
Founded in 2018, this year’s conference will be the first ever iteration of North Model United Nations. As a brand new conference, they aim to provide all delegates and staff with a fun, immersive and unforgettable model united nations experience. Furthermore, with a forecasted 300 soon-to-be delegates entering the community this year, MUN is no small affair. Those who are entering the MUN scene for the very first time will be able to learn and gain valuable insight in their fledgling conference. In addition, they will be providing a solid and inclusive platform for the many veteran and aspiring delegates to discuss politics and international affairs, all the while developing their leadership and public speaking skills.
NorthMUN 2019 will be held at Simon Fraser University’s Burnaby Mountain Campus located at 8888 University Dr on Sunday, April 7th from 8 am to 6 pm. Committee sessions and conference ceremonies will be held jointly between the Academic Quadrangle and the West Mall Centre.
Model United Nations is, as its name suggests, a simulation of the United Nations. Students, or delegates, represent their nation of choice in stimulating debates about global issues as well as seek to achieve a resolution while maintaining diplomacy. As such, MUN is integral in teaching critical thinking and appreciation of alternate perspectives— ultimately, an enriching as well as beneficial experience.
