Application call for 2022 SMART Scholarship in USA – Fully Funded. The scholarship is open to all nationalities and the deadline is 31st December 2021.
SMART offers scholarships for undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students currently pursuing a degree in one of the 21 STEM disciplines. SMART scholars receive full tuition, annual stipends, internships, and guaranteed employment with the DoD after graduation.
Scholars enter the program as either Recruitment or Retention.
Recruitment Scholars:
Recruitment scholars are those who are not employed in a permanent civilian position by a SMART Sponsoring Facility (SF) at the time of the award. Scholars who are employed by the Sponsoring Facility in temporary or internship positions at the time of award are considered recruitment scholars.
Recruitment scholars are required to perform summer internships and complete a period of post-graduation employment at their assigned DoD Sponsoring Facility.
Retention Scholars:
Retention scholars are those who are employed in a permanent or renewable term civilian position by the Sponsoring Facility (SF) at the time of the award. Retention employment can be either full-time permanent or full-time term. This should be indicated on the SMART application under Professional Experiences.
Retention scholars work with their DoD Sponsoring Facilities to establish a return-to-work schedule during the summer months. Upon graduation, they are required to return to their DoD Sponsoring Facility to complete their service commitment period.
The DoD assists current government employees further their education and continues their careers as part of the DoD Science and Technology (S&T) workforce. For the most part, current DoD employees, if selected by their current organization, will remain employed by their current organization as retention scholars. Such applicants will be required to submit contact information for their current employer and a letter from their supervisor acknowledging that he/she is aware that the applicant is seeking funding under the SMART Program.
Upon acceptance into the SMART Program, scholars will receive a copy of the SMART Scholar Handbook. These terms and conditions apply to scholars that have been offered and have accepted their award.
The SMART application is open August through December of every year, with awards being granted the following spring. Review the below requirements to ensure you are eligible to apply for this life-changing opportunity.

Active duty military members who wish to apply for the SMART Scholarship must be separated or on terminal leave on or before August 1, 2022 to be eligible. Reserve and National Guard members are eligible to apply. Current ROTC participants with a future service commitment are not eligible to apply.
Scholarships are awarded for a minimum of 1 year and a maximum of 5 years of funding, depending on degree requirements. SMART is a one-for-one commitment; for every year of degree funding, the scholar commits to working for a year with the DoD as a civilian employee.
