Apply Now: McGraw Fellowship for Business Journalism – Fall 2024 Edition!
Journalists with impactful story ideas that explore financial or economic issues can now apply for the McGraw Fellowship for Business Journalism. The Fellowship offers up to $15,000 in grants, along with editorial support, to help produce in-depth investigative stories. Freelance and staff journalists in any media format—text, audio, photo, or short-form video—are encouraged to apply, especially those from diverse backgrounds.
You don’t need to be a business reporter to apply; past Fellows have tackled topics like healthcare, education, economic inequality, and corporate accountability. The McGraw Fellowship welcomes local, national, or international projects, including those that cover underrepresented communities.
The Fellowship is not residency-based, and Fellows work from their own offices. Freelancers can use part of the grant for living expenses. Applicants must have the ability to execute a complex project and ideally possess expertise in their chosen topic.
Benefits
- Budget : No budget is required at the time of application. Applicants chosen as finalists will be asked to provide an estimated budget at that time.
- The stipend — up to $15,000 — is intended to cover travel and research expenses incurred in reporting the stories. The exact amount each Fellow receives will depend on the time it takes to complete the project and the expenses needed. Freelance journalists can use a share of their stipend to help cover living expenses while they work on the project. For those who are on staff at a publication, some of the funding can be used to hire a replacement to cover the Fellow’s regular beat while they work on their project.
- In addition to financial support, the McGraw Center provides editorial guidance throughout the Fellowship. McGraw Center works closely with Fellows to develop and refine their ideas during the reporting phase and edit their drafts into publishable stories. The extent of our editorial role will depend on the needs of the outlet in which the piece will appear.
