The African Studies Centre in Leiden, Netherlands calls applications for a fully-funded Visiting Fellowship 2020. Visiting research fellow use their time in Leiden for data analysis and/or writing, often on a joint project with one or more ASCL staff members. A visiting research fellowship is for a maximum of 90 days.

he African Studies Centre (Afrika-Studiecentrum) is a scientific institute in the Netherlands that undertakes social-science research on Africa with the aim of promoting a better understanding of historical, current and future social developments in Sub-Saharan Africa. The center is an interfaculty institute of Leiden University. The present director is Jan-Bart Gewald. The institute is located in the Pieter de la Court Building of Leiden University’s Faculty of Social Sciences.

Benefits/Compensation 

The Visiting Fellowship Program at African Studies Center Leiden, Netherlands is a fully-funded opportunity. The fellowship will cover the following expenses

  • A return ticket (economy class).
  • A daily stipend to cover living expenses as well as a single room to live.
  • Also, medical/liability insurance (please note that this insurance does not cover the cost of treatment of a pre-existing medical condition).
  • Furthermore, the use of (shared) office facilities and library facilities.

Requirements 

 

Candidates must have the following qualifications in order to be eligible for this fully-funded visiting fellowship program at African Studies Center Leiden

  • A doctoral degree by the time of applying.
  • Experience in conducting research, as part of the Ph.D. and/or in later projects with a focus on Africa.
  • The candidate should actively be pursuing an academic/research career.
  • Have published books, book chapters and/or journal articles in recent years that meet international standards.
  • Furthermore, in accordance with visa regulations, the candidate must be ready to return to the country of which he/she is a citizen and/or a current resident upon completion of the fellowship.
  • However, preference will be given to applicants based in Africa. ‘Africa’ here refers to the member states of the African Union. ‘Based in’ Africa is understood to mean having lived in Africa during at least two of the last four years.
