Study Grants in Portugal – How to Apply via the OS Online Portal
If you’re enrolling in a public or private higher education program in Portugal, the national study grant (“bolsa de estudo do ensino superior”) provides vital financial support to students from low- and middle-income households. The grant is awarded annually, disbursed in monthly instalments, and does not require repayment.
Who Can Apply?
Eligible applicants include:
- Portuguese citizens or permanent residents from EU/EEA countries, refugees, or those with long-term residency permits
- Enrolled in at least 30 ECTS worth of bachelor’s, integrated master’s, master’s, or professional technical programmes
- Belonging to households whose per capita income is below €11,049.89, or €12,569.89 for working students
- With annual family assets (movable property) below specified thresholds
When and How to Apply
- Apply online via the official Student Portal between 25 June – 30 September or within 20 working days after later enrolment or start of an internship
- Application is free
- Upload required documents: ID, tax returns, asset statements, proof of residence or rent, IBAN, and documents for all household members
How Much You Get
- The grant covers at least 125% of the public tuition fee, depending on financial need, up to a maximum of €5,981.73 per year
- Paid monthly over 10 instalments via bank transfer
Conditions & Renewal
- Must maintain academic progress (minimum credit completion each year)
- Renew annually by verifying income, assets, and academic performance
- Doutoramento (PhD) students must apply separately through the FCT funding body
