Each year the Mathematical Sciences Institute may offer an award known as the Johnstone Family Mathematics Scholarship (“the award”). The objective of the award is to support undergraduate students pursuing studies in mathematics or statistics at the Australian National University. Professor Iain Johnstone (Bachelor of Science (Hons), 1978 and Master of Science, 1979) provides the funding for this scholarship as a tribute to his parents.
The offer letter will contain the value of the award. Johnstone Family Mathematics Scholarship duration covers the recipient’s undergraduate degree, up to three years in total. However, it may extend to Honours year at the discretion of the Selection Committee, if funds are available.
Moreover, the Johnstone Family Mathematics Scholarship fund amounts to $5,000 per annum for up to three years in total. Applicants will receive the scholarship in equal installments at the beginning of each semester.
However, the recipient is responsible for making payment of all tuition fees by the prescribed date as set out by the University each session. Furthermore, recipients of this award are responsible for the costs of books, study materials, accommodation and all other costs of the study.
The award is available each year to a continuing ANU student who:
Applications are called for with a closing date as set by the Mathematical Sciences Institute. The application should be submitted on the prescribed electronic form and supporting documentation forwarded to the Administrative Officer – Education, Mathematical Sciences Institute, by email or post prior to the closing date.
Applications consist of a one-page supporting statement by the student which details why they deserve a scholarship and how the funds would enable them to better pursue their studies and allow them to reach their potential.
Selection is made on the basis of academic merit. All factors being equal in terms of academic merit, candidates meeting following equity components will receive preference:
The selection committee will offer the award to the most eligible candidate. The Selection Committee consists the Director, Mathematical Sciences Institute (or nominee) as a chairman, and includes the Director, Research School of Finance, Actuarial Studies, and Statistics (or nominee), and at least one academic staff member whose research interests include statistics or statistical science.
The Selection Committee reserves the right to make no award if it considers there is no applicant of sufficient merit. The Mathematical Sciences Institute may also vary the number of awards where funds allow. Also, it may offer the award in exceptional circumstances or based on the standard of applications or students.
