ASHRAE invites application for HVAC System Design Competition.  It sponsors these competitions to encourage students to become involved in a profession that is crucial to ensuring a sustainable future for our Earth – the design of energy-efficient HVAC systems. Moreover, ASHRAE will recognize the outstanding student design projects at the 2020 ASHRAE Winter Meeting to be held February 2020 in Orlando, Florida.

The student design competition’s guidelines provide enough background information to enable the teams to design or select the HVAC system for the given building or to design a sustainable building implementing an integrated building design process (the architectural and building design for sustainability, and its supporting mechanical and electrical systems) for the given program.

Teams may compete in one of the three categories: HVAC Design Calculations; HVAC System Selection and; Integrated Sustainable Building Design (ISBD)

The 2019 student competition focuses on a new small hospital in Budapest, Hungary. The final HVAC System Selection and Design for the proposed building shall address the following major design goals:

• Low Life Cycle Cost
• Low Environmental Impact
• Comfort and Health
• Creative High-Performance Green Design
• Synergy (with architecture)

Prizes

Awards will be presented to the winners of each of the three competitions as follows:

• 1st place
• 2nd place
• 3rd place
• Rising Star

A representative from each team from the winner circle will receive an opportunity to attend the 2020 ASHRAE Winter Meeting to be held in Orlando all cost paid. The cost includes free transportation and two nights’ lodging. Further, the ASHRAE Student Program will award the winners as well.

Also, the team in the first place will receive a cash award of the amount of $2,000. Additionally, ASHRAE will reimburse $100 to attend the event.

Also, candidates will require to prepare a 24 x 36-inch poster for display at the ASHRAE Student Program.

How To Apply

Candidates must make all the submissions for HVAC System Design Competition electronically via the ASHRAE FTP site. Further, only those teams that register will get the FTP site information and instructions for uploading entries. If you do not register your team, you will NOT receive this information.

The submission for the HVAC Design Calculations competition must be in PDF format only. Separate visual aids are not acceptable(PowerPoint, YouTube, etc.). Moreover, the deliverable presentation should consist of a 35-page maximum technical report in PDF format only.

The submission for HVAC System Selection competition and Integrated Sustainable Building Design competition must be visual aids, no longer than 15 minutes. Further, applicants must automate all PPTs and not page by page click.

Font size should be 11 pts, utilizing either Arial or Times New Roman.

Deadline

Applicants may only make HVAC System Design Competition submission via the ASHRAE FTP site. Likewise, only the registered team will receive a link to the ASHRAE FTP site. Applicants must register before May 3, 2019, to enter the competition.
