The John H. Daniels Fellowship supports researchers at the National Sporting Library & Museum (NSLM), a research library and also, fine arts museum dedicated to preserving, promoting and sharing the literature, art, also, the culture of equestrian, angling and field sports. Since 2007, the NSLM has hosted the fellowship program in honor of the legacy of sportsman and book collector John H. Daniels (1921-2006). Further, Past Fellowship recipients include post-graduate students, authors, curators, professors,  also, scholars researching a variety of subjects related to field sports.

Moreover, The diversity of Fellows’ projects reflects the wide variety of material within the F. Ambrose Clark Rare Book Room and the NSLM collections. Topics include history, art, literature, anthropology, also, sport, with research projects ranging from the architecture of horse stables, history of horsemanship, equestrian fashion, and poetry, to falconry, veterinary science, environmental conservation and also,  fly fishing. Over the years, the Library has been the recipient of several significant book collections including:

• The Huth-Lonsdale-Arundel Collection
• The Baron Ludwig von Hundersdorf Collection
• The John H. and Martha Daniels Collection
• The Margaret C. Woolums Collection
• The Captain V. S. Littauer Collection
• The F. Ambrose Clark Rare Book Room houses 16th-century volumes on classical equitation. Further,  the first edition (1653) of Izaak Walton’s The Compleat Angler (with 90 subsequent editions), early American shooting and fishing books, and rare volumes of sporting art. Also, The oldest book in the collection was publish in 1523
• Also, The Chapman Family Fly-Fishing Collection.

Benefit

• Maximum stipend award is $2,000 per month.
• Further, Residence on campus is available for award recipients. Please justify all expenditures.

Eligibility

• University faculty, graduate students, museum professionals, librarians, independent researchers, writers, and interested others are to apply. Further, Fellowships are for two months or less.
• If applying from abroad, please consult applicable Visa guidelines before making your application.

• The application must be received by email by August 15, 2019. Also,  all required documents are to be submitted in a single PDF attachment.

• CV or Resume Research proposal of 1000 words or less
• Further, Budget (not to exceed $2,000 monthly) and choice of dates (January – December 2020)
• Letter of recommendation from advisor or colleague emailed separately
