The Safe Abortion Action Fund (SAAF) calls for application for the funding opportunity. SAAF works toward establishing a world where women have rights to access safe and legal abortion. Moreover, SAAF protects and empower women to exercise these rights and save their lives. Hosted by the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), SAAF supports local and grassroots organizations, providing flexible grants for projects that:

• Increase access to quality abortion services with a focus on addressing the needs of poor, vulnerable and hard to reach women and girls
• Support legal as well as policy reforms in countries that restrict abortion
• Tackle negative societal norms and attitudes towards abortion, in order to create an enabling environment that ensures every woman and girl has access to quality abortion services
• Generate as well as disseminate evidence to improve the quality and effectiveness of abortion programming and advocacy strategies

By visibly funding projects using an international funding mechanism, SAAF works to de-stigmatize abortion and to legitimize the abortion debate by creating and supporting a ‘network of champions’ who are more empowered to work at local and national levels.

Safe Abortion Action Fundunding

Safe Abortion Action Fund will provide US$ 80,000 for the maximum funding level for selected projects with a maximum duration of 15 months. Project start dates will be 1 January 2020. While the latest end date possible is 31 March 2021.

Who is eligible for the Safe Abortion Action Fund?

Only local and grassroots organizations registered in selected countries are eligible for funding. SAAF will provide at least 50% of funds to organizations in priority countries. SAAF can also fund projects led by individual organizations, a group of organizations or national and regional networks based in the Global South.

Moreover, organizations without a formal registration eligible to apply if they have a fiscal sponsor. A fiscal sponsor is a registered organization that will sign the contract with SAAF on the applicant´s behalf. The applicant, as well as the fiscal sponsor, must have a written memorandum of understanding outlining their respective roles and responsibilities. Further, the fiscal sponsor must be based in one of the eligible countries. The fiscal sponsor will be subjected to due diligence checks by the SAAF Secretariat.

How to apply for the Safe Abortion Action Fund?

Interested grassroots organizations may apply for the Safe Abortion Action Fund by downloading and completing the application form. Candidates may send the application form via email. Along with the application form, candidates must also attach the necessary documentation.

The deadline to submit the SAAF Funding application form is on 11 August 2019.
