Google aims to provide unrestricted gifts as support for research at institutions around the world. Hence, it announces the application for the Google AI Faculty Research Award for the year 2019/2020. The program focus on funding world-class technical research in Computer Science, Engineering, and related fields.

Also known as Research Awards Program, the Faculty Research Awards supports academic research in computer science, engineering, and related fields. Google AI seeks to fund world-class research at top universities, facilitate interaction between Google and academia, through the program. As well as it aims to support projects which will provide its output openly to the research community. Further, these awards are unrestricted gifts to universities and support roughly the cost of one graduate student for one year of work.

Google AI Faculty Research Award

Faculty Research Awards support one graduate student for one year. Hence the successful candidates will receive funding to cover PhD degree for one year (salary plus tuition; or research salary in regions where PhD tuition is covered through other means). Further, the student will receive a modest conference travel for the student (1,500 USD for US universities, 3,000 USD for universities outside the US).

Eligibility for the Google AI Faculty Research Award

Universities, Principal Investigator and PhD applicants may apply for the Google AI Faculty Research Award if they are:

  • Permanent faculties from universities all around the world are eligible to apply. Also PhD students, from faculty at research institutions that award research degrees to PhD students are eligible to apply. However, applications from professors, researchers, or faculty members at non-degree-granting research institutes may not apply.
  • An applicant may only serve as a Principal Investigator or co-Principal Investigator on one proposal per round.
  • Each Principal Investigator on a proposal must be a permanent faculty at a university or a degree-granting research institution.
  • Assistant professors, associate professors, and full professors may apply for the Research Award. However,  applications from professors on behalf of students, postdocs, or others are not eligible for the award.
  • The primary Principal Investigator on a proposal is the point person for all communications regarding the proposal, including funding decisions.
  • There are no limits on the number of proposals that different Principal Investigators may submit.
  • If an applicant’s proposal was not selected for funding the previous round, they may apply with a new proposal (or substantively revised proposal) the following round.
  • Principal Investigators submitting the same proposal (without revision) to multiple rounds of the Research Awards is not eligible for funding.
  • Research Awards are designed to support one year of work. On occasion a project may receive second-year funding if the first year has seen a significant outcome.

How to apply for the Google AI Research Awards?

In order to apply for the Faculty Research Award, the applicants must submit a proposal to Google AI, with relevant project. The proposal should document the research purpose, timeline, and grants properly. Further, the project championed by a Google employee or sponsor will help proposal remain on track with google’s project needs.

The applicant may submit the proposal online before the deadline.

Deadline

Google accepts the application for the Research Award until 30 September 2019. Applications arriving after the deadline are not eligible for the Faculty Research Awards.
