The South African Research Chair in Multilevel Government, Law and Development at the Dullah Omar Institute of the University of the Western Cape, and the Centre for Federalism and Governance Studies of Addis Ababa University calls applications for African School on Decentralisation for the session 2020. The African School of Decentralisation runs for two-week and throughout that time it includes the innovative courses that examine the concepts and practice of decentralization in African countries from comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives. The inaugural African School on Decentralisation is going to take place in Cape Town, South Africa. Moreover, the program runs from 25th May to 5th June 2020 under the theme ‘Decentralisation and Development in Africa’.

Purpose

Moreover, the program aims to give content to and promote the African Union’s Charter on the Values and Principles of Decentralisation, Local Governance, and Local Development which, having been adopted in 2014, is yet to come into operation. In addition to that, it also seeks to create a platform for knowledge-sharing on the vast array of issues affecting and/or arising out of decentralization in Africa thus contributing towards increased knowledge and research outputs, policy innovation and the promotion of good governance.

Funding/Financial Aid

In general, the African School for Decentralization Program offers the food and accommodation facilities to the participants. But the organizer offers fundings for economy class air tickets to the few needy students. Furthermore, applicants need to manage their visa and health insurance expenses by themselves.

Eligibilities 

The organizer University of Western Cape invites applications from

  • State officials at national, state/provincial and local levels as well as practitioners in multilevel (decentralized) governance systems.
  • Members of local and international non-governmental organizations.
  • Furthermore, post-graduate students and researchers in law, public policy, governance, development, politics and related fields with an interest in decentralization in Africa.
