- This position reports to the Department of Business Manager.
- The Business Specialist independently manages financial administration of state and non-state budgets in the large research, teaching and outreach department of Plant Biology at SEBS/NJAES.
- Additionally, the position also serves as liaison with collaborative institutions and sponsor agencies regarding the specifics of individual grant proposals and awards, as well as with the Rutgers Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP), the Office of Corporate Contracts
Responsibilities
The incumbents will do the following duties
- They oversee the administration of assigned accounts within the unit (including state-budgeted, designated, auxiliary, restricted, plant, gifts, endowments and sponsored research accounts) for faculty with active externally-funded research programs.
- Provide administrative support for pre-award operations as well as budget development assistance
- They also give training to department faculty regarding RFP interpretation of agency requirements, and preparation of Rutgers internal Research Administration and Proposal Submission System (RAPSS) documents, eCOI disclosures/research certifications, and grant submission procedures.
- Additionally, the incumbents must ensure that all financial activity is in compliance with state and federal regulations, as well as with requirements of individual granting agencies.
- Likewise, they should manage, analyze and reconcile accounts and prepares internal financial reports for use by individual faculty and for departmental planning.
- Moreover, they must coordinate and organizes documentation in preparation of sub-awards and sub-contracts as per requirements of SEBS, Rutgers GCA, and ORSP.
- Additionally, they perform professional work requiring detailed specialized knowledge of the organization, including its structure, operations, strategies, and objectives.
- Furthermore, they will apply concepts, theories, practices, regulations, and principles to all financial and grant/development activities within the unit to achieve successfully funded research programs in Plant Biology
Eligibility
The candidates must meet the following requirements to be eligible for the post of Business Specialist at Rutgers
- They must have a Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- Also, a minimum of two years(2) relevant experience in a financial/accounting function, good communication skills, and computer literacy.
- Additionally, they require knowledge and understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and practices.
- Similarly, they need specialized knowledge of grant restrictions/regulations and interpretation of specific sponsor agency requirements.
- They should also have proficiency in the preparation and submission of research grant proposals. That should be through the federal on-line Grants.gov portal, NSF FastLane.
- Working knowledge of Rutgers system to system RAPSS portal for grant submissions.
Preferred Qualifications
- The incumbents must have experience in higher education grants management preferred.
- Furthermore, working knowledge of system-to-system portals for federal grant submission, a thorough understanding of federal agency policies and Uniform Guidance.
- Also, they must have proficiency in Oracle financial ledgers and other web-based programs

- Completion of ORED’s S.P.A.C.E certificate program which covers topics relevant to sponsored research funding within the first two years.
