International Rescue Committee Resettlement, Asylum and Integration Department calls application for 2020 Summer Internship on Case Management. This summer internship at International Rescue Committee will run from June 1, 2020, and continue through August 21, 2020, and is unpaid. The internship will be a minimum of 15 hours (about 2 days) per week for 12 weeks.

Summary

The Case Management Intern will be based in the Baltimore, Maryland Office of International Rescue Committee.
The intern will assist IRC’s resettlement team with daily activities that help to welcome and contribute to the self-sufficiency of refugees, asylees and other humanitarian immigrants in the Baltimore metropolitan area. Interns will work directly with individual clients and families to assist with providing resettlement services. Furthermore, the Case Management Intern will report directly to the Caseworker or Senior Resettlement Supervisor.

Learning Elements 

At the end of the internship, the intern will

  • Learn about the services that refugees, asylees and other humanitarian immigrants are eligible for upon arrival in the U.S., including public benefits in Maryland and local resources in the Baltimore metropolitan area.
  • Also, learn about strategies for effective, holistic case management.
  • Develop resourcefulness and problem-solving skills to work independently in different situational contexts.
  • Learn to communicate effectively with clients across cultures.

Responsibilities 

Under the direction of the supervisor, the intern will be doing the following duties

  • Assisting clients with key services such as activating EBT cards for food stamps, applying for Social Security cards, or obtaining Maryland ID cards.
  • Similarly, assisting clients with transportation to medical and other required appointments.
  • In coordination with the resettlement team, conducting office, home or community-based orientation sessions on topics such as opening bank accounts, using EBT cards are grocery stores, or using public transportation throughout Baltimore.
  • Also, assisting with service documentation through case-notes and case file maintenance.
  • Furthermore, performing other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Ability to work independently and as a team member in a fast-paced, cross-cultural environment.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and reliable follow-through, with outstanding attention to detail. In addition to that, excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and databases.
  • Fluency in English required. Bilingual ability in one of the predominant languages of the local client base is desired (particularly Amharic, Arabic, Burmese, Dari, Spanish, Swahili, Tigrinya, Urdu).
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable access to a vehicle with current insurance and the ability to travel regularly throughout Baltimore strongly preferred.
  • Furthermore, prior experience and interest in working with refugees and immigrants preferred.
  • Similarly, prior experience and interest in case management or social work preferred.

Moreover, IRC is currently working in about 40 countries and 26 U.S. cities where it resettles refugees and helps them become self-sufficient. It focuses mainly on health, education, economic wellbeing, power, and safety.
