Job Title: Scientific Editor
Organization: World Meteorological Organization (WMO)
Duties
- Edit and/or copy-edit a variety of WMO publications, ranging from general to technical, meeting the United Nations productivity standards and relying on the WMO English Style Guide and guidance from senior colleagues
- Additionally, copy-edit correspondence and documentation prepared for constituent body sessions of WMO;
- Also, use various publishing software and platforms in the editorial process in order to prepare efficiently the publications for downstream processing and publishing;
- Additionally, provide guidance to external collaborators and in-house authors on the WMO editorial policy and quality standards;
- Also, participate in the development of editorial policies; advise other members of the Secretariat on English editorial matters; counsel and assist external editors on relevant WMO procedures, in consultation with senior colleagues and/or technical experts;
- Likewise, during WMO conferences and meetings, act as a report writer, when required;
- Participate in terminology work and other language-related projects with LCC linguists;
- Furthermore, he/she will carry out other relevant duties as required.
Qualifications
Education
- Advanced university degree in meteorology, hydrology, physics, environmental, or related scientific disciplines related to the work of WMO.
- Having passed the United Nations Language Competitive Examination for English-language Copy Preparers, Proofreaders, Production Editors would be an advantage.
Experience
- A minimum of 3 years/ A minimum of five years of recent continuous experience in scientific editing and writing in the English language.
- For freelance editors, demonstrated work record with recognized scientific publishers, institutions, academia, or National Meteorological or Hydrological Services.
- Furthermore, for those working, or having worked for an international organization, demonstrated a work record of scientific editing.
- Familiarity with the range of WMO subject matters, as well as with the preparation of reports and documents for international conferences and meetings.
- Additionally, demonstrated ability in editing, using publishing software, and the ability to manage several tasks and shift priorities and ability to comply with the United Nations productivity standards
Salary
- Annual net base salary on an initial appointment is: US$ 47895
- Annual post adjustment on initial salary is: US$ 33766 (in addition to the net base salary)
