Organization:  INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATIVE MECHANISM FOR MYANMAR

Duties

• Assists in producing accurate translations of written and/or oral witness statements, media articles, and other documents from Kachin, Rakhine, Rohingya, Shan, and/or Myanmar languages into English, and vice versa as required by the Mechanism.
• Additionally, attends meetings as part of a team, takes notes either directly from statements delivered in the languages of competence or from the interpretation, and subsequently uses the notes to produce draft summary records, subject to revision.
• Furthermore, the incumbent provides interpretation support for IIMM internal and external meetings.
• Consults and coordinates with other associate translators, revisers, analysts, investigators, legal officers, and supervisors
• Also, he/she provides advice to other members within the work unit on matters concerning translation policy and practice and assists them in the preparation of translations, and consults with relevant Sections, and carries out research to clarify ambiguities and rectify substantive errors.
• Additionally, undertakes open-source research on matters related to Myanmar.
• Also, performs such other duties as may be directed by the supervisor and the Head/ Deputy Head of the Mechanism.

Qualifications for Associate Translator Vacancy in Geneva

Education

An advanced university degree from a university or institution of equivalent status in translation, interpreting, social sciences, law, or other related fields. Additionally, the organization may accept the first-level degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of two (2) years of experience translating and interpreting from one of the languages of Myanmar (Kachin, Myanmar, Rakhine, Rohingya, and/or Shan languages) into English, and vice versa

Experience translating legal documents is desirable.

Also, experience providing translation or interpretation services in support of criminal investigations is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the positions advertised, fluency in English. Also, fluency in one of the languages of Myanmar (Kachin, Myanmar Rakhine, Rohingya and/or Shan languages. Likewise, knowledge of a second local language is desirable.
