General Summary/Purpose:
Molecular team lead for infectious diseases diagnostics is needed for 2 NIH-funded Centers (The Center for POC Technologies Research for Sexually Transmitted Diseases) and the Center for Influenza Research. New molecular diagnostics are of key importance to the diagnosis and control of infectious disease pandemics. Both Centers participate in the qualification and verification of new molecular platforms for COVID-19 disease detection.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The incumbent will have the following duties
- Utilize advanced scientific knowledge and experience toward specialized research interests.
- Also, develop, design and manage substantial research projects, coordinates own objectives and those of laboratory team members.
- May oversee data collection, analysis, and verification based on specialized skill and knowledge.
- Likewise, use advanced knowledge base to formulate research method.
- Co-author/author publications. Contribute original thoughts, hypotheses, and analysis to write reports, abstracts, and manuscripts.
- Similarly, speak at or attend conferences representing issues and Hopkins research.
- Write grant proposals utilizing the applications of specialized knowledge with discretion and judgment.
- Also, independently develop protocol and criteria.
- Ability to manage and maintain large collections of biological samples and organisms.
- Additionally, the ability to apply for regulatory permits including but not limited to: CDC import/export permits and USDA sample request/transfer permits.
- Also, make decisions regarding research projects that may require assessment, revision of objectives, or altering scientific direction; considers resources and lab priorities when making decisions.
Qualifications for Vacancy for Research Analyst
The candidate must meet the following requirements
- Requires master’s degree in related science, and a minimum of 6 years of related experience.
- Likewise, requires proven technical knowledge and laboratory experience in molecular diagnostics.
- Also, the ability to contribute to manuscripts for publication essential.
- The individual will also serve as the laboratory biological and chemical safety officer, and must be knowledgeable regarding various biological safety levels (BSL 1-4) and their requirements, as well as chemical waste disposal.
- The individual must be highly organized and capable of working independently from direct supervision.
- Moreover, the candidate must be able to effectively communicate with primary investigator and collaborators and to national and international audiences.
Preferred Skills:
Extensive knowledge of molecular biology laboratory techniques including, but not limited to: cloning, restriction enzyme (RE) digest, amplification techniques including PCR, qPCR, rRT-PCR, and isothermal amplification. Also, broad knowledge of Sanger sequencing and next generation sequencing (NGS) a plus. Furthermore, extensive experience with bacterial culture. Broad knowledge of immunologic assays a plus. Also, broad knowledge of various commercial instrumentation systems such as commercial available diagnostic platforms and nucleic acid extraction platforms is expected.
