Director, Payroll – Human Resources & Payroll
The George Mason University Human Resources & Payroll department is looking for an enthusiastic and energetic person for a Director of Payroll. Responsibilities:
The candidate will have the following duties
- Ensures proper preparation and timely processing of payroll in compliance with federal and state laws;
- Also, evaluates and improves payroll processes; Maintains payroll guidelines by writing and updating policies and procedures;
- Likewise, ensures payroll accounts are balanced by resolving payroll discrepancies;
- Maintains data integrity of payroll information;
- Oversees quarterly and end of year tax filing processes;
- Prepares reports by compiling summaries of earnings, taxes, deductions, leave, disability, and nontaxable wages;
- Furthermore, develops and oversees fiscal controls to ensure accuracy, timely reconciliation, and prompt payment of payroll deductions and benefits;
- Serves as the point of contact for Internal, State and Federal HR & Payroll audits;
- Determines payroll liabilities by approving the calculation of employee federal and state income and social security taxes, and employer’s social security, unemployment, and workers compensation payments;
- Furthermore, complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions;
- Communicates appropriately with customers regarding payroll compliance and best practices;
- Manages payroll team of 7 employees;
- Likewise, works with International Tax Office and Provost Office as it relates to international legislation, non-resident alien tax treaties and expat issues;
- Also, works closely with Fiscal Services on Payroll related issues.
Required Qualifications for Vacancy for Director
- Master’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, and/or a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of equivalent six (6) years of leadership experience in payroll for a large, complex organization with multi-state and international footprint;
- Additionally, expertise in navigating through complex employee pay (especially academic pay), payroll processes, and technical issues;
- Extensive knowledge of international, federal, state and local tax regulations, and demonstrated experience developing and implementing payroll processes in compliance with payroll standards, legal compliance and best practices;
- Furthermore, experience working with quarterly and year end filings such as VEC, 941, 1042s and W2s;
- Experience dealing with the calculation of fringe rate and retiree imputed income;
- Deep understanding of interfaces and account reconciliations;
- Demonstrated experience in successfully partnering with multiple stakeholder groups from diverse backgrounds and building consensus in a large, rapidly growing organization;
- Similarly, strong business acumen to understand key business drivers, organization communications and data, organizational and unit performance measures, as well as, understand the impact and implications of decisions on leadership objectives;
- Experience successfully completing audits from the federal and state level;
- Also, experience processing executive pay;
- Likewise, excellent analytical, oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
