2023 Vacancy for Climate Change Specialist at The World Bank

SCCFE is seeking a highly motivated Internship Climate Change Specialist, to advance the unit’s work in carbon markets, especially in developing innovative solutions through the Climate Warehouse program and scaling and implementing these solutions though the Partnership for Market Implementation.

The Climate Change Specialist will be based in Washington, DC and will report to SCCFE’s Practice Manager

Duties & Accountabilities for the Climate Change Specialist

Below are the Responsibilities and Expectations for the Climate Change Specialist Internship with The World Bank:

  • Lead policy, regulations, and institutions for next-gen carbon markets in developing nations. Create structures for compliance markets, including Article 6, and voluntary carbon markets, aligning with the Partnership for Market Implementation’s innovation pillar.
  • Lead the development and enhancement of digital MRV systems for various sectors like energy, forestry, REDD+, and agriculture. Collaborate with World Bank teams, explore technology roles (e.g., GIS, IoT, machine learning) to reduce costs and boost transparency in carbon markets.
  • Lead external engagement, partnerships, and discussions to promote participation and learning from testing. Target various users of digital and national MRV systems, building their capacity for carbon market involvement.
  • Lead the development of knowledge products under the technical work program of SCCFE.
  • Support the development of Climate Warehouse and Invest for Climate initiatives within the Partnership for Market Implementation, focusing on regulatory frameworks for carbon markets.
  • Support SCCFE in tasks related to climate finance and carbon markets. Contribute to innovative approaches, tools, and blended finance structures using carbon markets and concessional resources.

Perform other duties and functions as assigned by the SCCFE Practice Manager or other SCCFE lead.

Selection Criteria:

  • Require a Master’s or equivalent post-bachelor’s degree in relevant fields like environmental science, natural resource management, geography, law, policy, economics, or engineering.
  • Work experience in in the practical application of greenhouse gas accounting methodologies;
  • Experience with the development and/or application of monitoring tools as applied to the AFOLU sector or energy, or waste management is desirable;
  • Experience with the development and/or application of monitoring tools as applied to the AFOLU sector or energy, or waste management is desirable;
  • Relevant work experience in developing countries is essential;
  • Strong understanding of international carbon markets and the information systems used for generating and transacting carbon assets, in particular carbon accounting methodologies and validation and verification processes;
  • Experience with the applications of new technologies in carbon markets, such as satellite imagery, and be able to use software tools to process and analyze this data is desirable;
  • Strong understanding of detailed technical elements related to Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and ability to explain complex concepts through simple visual representations;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English; Proficiency in other WB languages is an advantage.

Term duration: The duration for this position spans a stimulating and productive (3)three-years  journey.
