Assistant/Associate Professor for American Studies/American Literature required in San Jose State University.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. in American Studies, English Literature (focus on American Literature), or related field by start of appointment, a strong teaching record at the undergraduate level, and evidence of the ability to publish and engage in professional activities in the area of specialization. Area of Specialization: American Studies/American Literature (any historical period). The department especially welcomes candidates who pursue transnational American Studies. Area of Competence:  American Cultures. The department embraces a diversity of disciplinary approaches to enduring human questions and contemporary social justice issues.

Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Training or interest in: Transnational American Studies; American arts and literature; John Steinbeck; digital humanities. Experience with and/or interest in team-teaching. Experience with and/or interest in the public humanities and/or arts administration.

Responsibilities

In addition to courses in area of specialization and/or the lower division team-taught American Cultures GE sequence, the candidate will be expected to teach coursework in the English Department and may take a leadership role in the Martha Heasley Cox Center for Steinbeck Studies. Scholarship, committee work, and department service are expected.

Candidate must address the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation – through course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
