Responsibilities

The Director, Student Housing and Residential Life provides leadership, vision, and management direction for Student Housing and Residence Life (SHRL). Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Student Life, the incumbent serves as the chief housing officer of the University and oversees a comprehensive housing program designed to promote the University’s learning and student success-centered mission. As the chief administrator for the University’s student housing program, the director is responsible for coordinating extensive strategic planning, goal setting, and assessment initiatives; implements best practices related to residential life programs and services; provides direction and oversight for budgeting, long-term financial forecasts, physical plant and facility operations, conferencing, and administrative operations; ensures effective marketing and retention efforts to maximize occupancy; and directs emergency preparedness and crisis response efforts. The director provides leadership that ensures programs and services are aligned with the department’s goals of positively impacting retention and graduation rates among residential students; ensures that academic, social, recreational, cultural, and safety programs and services facilitate a living environment conducive to student success and directly oversees related assessment efforts. The director anticipates future housing trends and how to best accommodate those trends programmatically as well as through the initiation of building and renovation programs.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree is required; a Master’s degree from an accredited institution in higher education administration, student personnel or related field is preferred.
  • Six years of full-time, progressively responsible higher education supervisory/leadership experience within student housing operations and residential life, or the equivalent, is required, with a minimum of three years in a leadership/management role.
  • Demonstrated leadership in developing and delivering learning-centered programs and services that promote student success among diverse populations in student housing.
  • Demonstrated success in motivating and leading a large and diverse staff, including represented and non-represented union employees.
  • Demonstrated leadership with facilities maintenance, renovation, planning, and design.
  • Highly developed skills in budgeting and financial forecasting.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully manage complex crisis situations involving multiple stakeholders.
