About position

The University of Helsinki is accepting applications for the position of Geography Lecturer under the Department of Geosciences and Geography at the Faculty of Science. The lecturer will teach geography courses for the following degree programs
– Bachelor’s and Master’s Programmes in Geography
– Master’s Programme in Urban Studies and Planning (USP)

In addition to teaching, the position holder will perform the following duties

• Development and maintenance of the urban geography module at the University of Helsinki.
• Planning and provision of field courses and other courses.
• Supervise theses and dissertations, particularly bachelor’s theses.
• Participate in applications for external funding and the development of the relevant department’s research groups. Also, engage actively in research work, related public engagement and the maintenance of networks.
• Research and teaching emphasize a multidisciplinary approach and extensive methodological skills.
• Furthermore, s/he must complete any additional tasks assigned by the department or administration.

Requirements

In order to be eligible for the available position of Geography Lecturer at the University of Helsinki, the candidate must have the following qualifications

• A doctoral qualification in Geography, Geology or closely related field. In addition to that, the ability to give high-quality instruction based on research as well as the ability to supervise theses.
• Prior teaching experience will be an asset. Similarly, scientific publications and other research results with scientific merit will be considered while assessing candidates.
• The ability to develop methods, and experience with instruction in quantitative methods.
• Furthermore, the applicant must have fluency in Finnish. However, knowledge of both oral and written skills in Swedish is also important.
