Position Title: Assistant Professor of Psychology

About the University of District of Columbia

The University of District of Columbia is public historically black university in Washington DC, United States. This only public university in the city of Washington is also the among the few land-grant universities in the nation. In addition to that, it is a member school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. The full university system offers workforce and certificate programs in addition to Associate, Baccalaureate, Master’s, professional, and Doctoral degrees.

About role

The University College of Arts and Science is seeking a highly qualified professional in the faculty of Psychology. The tenure track appointment will teach core undergraduate courses in the Psychology program and possess specific expertise in statistics and research methods.

In particular, s/he will perform the following duties under the faculty of Psychology

  • Teach undergraduate courses in Psychology, specifically Statistics I & II, Research Methods & Design, Experimental Psychology, and other Core Psychology courses. In addition to that, supervise capstone research projects in Senior Seminar.
  • Conduct research in the discipline, and publish findings in professional journals, books, and/or electronic media that are consistent with the direction of the academic program.
  • Keep abreast of developments in their instructional area by reading current literature, collaborating with colleagues, participating in professional conferences, and designing online materials to enhance academic performance.
  • Initiate, facilitate, and moderate classroom student-centered instruction and discussions. Evaluate and grade students’ class work, assignments, and papers using rubrics and other student-centered approaches.
  • Maintain student attendance records, grades, and other required records.
  • Advice and mentor students on academic and career issues including undergraduate internships in the discipline.
  • Similarly, maintain regularly scheduled office hours in order to advise and assist students.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to address teaching and research issues.
  • Write grant proposals to procure external research funding.
  • Serve on academic or administrative committees that deal with institutional policies, program, division, college matters, and academic issues.
  • Participate in student recruitment, registration, and placement activities as well as maintain currency in the use of software and technology in the classroom.
  • Furthermore, performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

An ideal appointee for the post must have the following qualifications

  • A doctoral qualification in Psychology from APA accredited university. In addition to that, a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and research.
  • Minimum of two years (role as a graduate teaching assistant acceptable) of teaching Psychology courses at the college/university level.
  • Evidence of scholarly publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at discipline-related conferences. Similarly, evidence of working with underserved populations both in the classroom and in the community.
  • Demonstrated record of collaborating with faculty colleagues through participation in program, college, and university activities.
