Position Title: Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Queensland Brain Institute

 About the University of Queensland

The University of Queensland’s Faculty of Medicine is an internationally recognized provider of world-class education and research. The research-intensive Faculty has a gross budget of almost $300 million, employs approximately 1000 continuing and fixed-term staff (headcount), has a community of more than 4000 non-salaried academic appointees and around 3200 students (headcount). The Faculty of Medicine offers Australia’s largest medical degree program for graduates and school-leavers. Undergraduate and postgraduate programs are available in the disciplines of Medicine, Health Sciences, E-Health, Mental Health, Biomedical Sciences, and Public Health.

Key responsibilities

In particular, the postdoctoral research performs the following tasks on a day to day basis at the Queensland Brain Institute

  • Designing paradigms to study visual attention, action selection, and learning in tethered walking in Drosophila preparations. Similarly, designing electrophysiology paradigms to interface with the above.
  • Writing code for the analysis of behavior and electrophysiology results.
  • Preparing results for presentation and write research papers for publication.
  • Furthermore, perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum requirements

In order to be eligible for the role, the postdoctoral researcher must have the following qualifications

  • Completion (or near completion) of a Ph.D. in neuroscience, genetics, or other related fields.
  • Experience conducting behavioral research with insects.
  • Ability to work independently and creatively, as well as to articulate ideas and to write clearly. Also, expertise in Matlab or Python coding.
  • Awareness of laboratory safety, occupational health and safety protocols.
  • Furthermore, evidence of a contribution to research, including successful external grant applications.
