Position: Scientific Computing Consultant

Position summary

The Minnesota Supercomputing Institute (MSI) at the University of Minnesota seeks to hire a Scientific Computing Consultant who enjoys engaging in research and solving cyberinfrastructure problems. As a Scientific Computing Consultant at MSI, the incumbent will join MSI’s Scientific Computing Solutions (SCS) group and work with MSI researchers in a variety of fields. SCS members engage in dedicated research activities, lead internal projects, and also provide user training. This position specifically will design projects, develop new algorithms, perform data analysis, co-author papers, and present at scientific conferences.

The position holder will be performing the following duties

  • Work directly with researchers to design and implement research projects.
  • Lead internal cross-functional cyberinfrastructure projects as well as anticipate and plan for researchers’ needs for new technologies.
  • Respond to MSI users’ requests by phone or by our email support ticket system.
  • Install, test, and debug scientific software.
  • Work with MSI staff to assist with other related projects.
  • Furthermore, other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. degree.
  • Along with Ph.D., understanding of Linux-based computing environments as well as experience using Linux command-line tools.
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language and also demonstrated experience in scientific computation.
  • Good documentation skills. Similarly, strong general troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Friendly presence and helpful attitude; excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well with others at all levels of the organization.
  • Outgoing, confident, and easily builds relationships. Similarly, a strong initiative to see tasks through to the end.
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt to change as well as the ability to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Furthermore, the ability to work responsibly with or without direct supervision.
