Associate Information Systems Officer position available in the Trade and Industry Statistics Section, Economics Statistics Branch, Statistics Division, Department of Economic and Social Affairs of UN. The Associate Information Systems Officer reports to the Chief of the International Merchandise Trade Statistics Section.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participates in preparing user requirements besides other technical specifications.
  • Assists in the design, development and installation of systems for data collection, processing, dissemination and visualization.
  • Also, undertakes analysis of well-defined modules within the system, develop enhancements and new features to existing systems; may design and implement small, stand-alone systems
  • Undertakes rigorous testing and proving of applications software.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of detailed data structure definitions for statistics data exchange and other functional specifications and user documentation for data exchange.
  • Moreover, maintains assigned portions of systems, providing operational support for system’s applications, analyzing and implementing system changes/upgrades, etc.
  • Writes and develops programs to interface with existing systems.
  • Ensures data security and integrity.
  • Furthermore, participates in developing disaster recovery plans.
  • Prepares, updates and maintains system’s documentation and related technical/procedural manuals.
  • In addition, assists in procurements, including conducting needs assessments and benchmarks, preparing technical specifications and evaluation criteria.
  • Assists in the set-up and monitoring of software performance measures.
  • Participates in Helpdesk support services.
  • Also, advises users on the most suitable hardware and software for different tasks; maintains and enhances software.
  • Drafts training materials and conducts training sessions and demonstrations of systems for users.
  • Participates with senior staff in assessing as well as testing new technology.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in computer science, information systems, mathematics, statistics or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • Also, a first-level university degree and no experience will be accepted for candidates who have passed the Young Professionals Programme Examination/United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P).
  • A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in the planning, design, development, implementation and maintenance of computer information systems or related area
  • Experience in data processing automation using tools such as SQL, Python and R for multi-terabyte datasets
  • Likewise, experience with Apache NiFi, database administration and migration, column store tables are desirable.
  • Experience in trade SDMX data structures and tools is desirable. Similarly, experience with the UN Comtrade system is desirable.
  • Fluency in English
  • Knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
